The United Kingdom is commemorating the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day with a series of national events that began on May 5 and will culminate on May 8. This historic milestone marks the end of World War II in Europe and honours the sacrifices made by the "Greatest Generation."
Royal Family Leads National Commemorations
On May 5, King Charles III and Queen Camilla led the royal family in a national tribute at the Queen Victoria Memorial, accompanied by the Prince and Princess of Wales and their children. The ceremony featured a military procession along The Mall, a flypast by the Red Arrows, and a poignant reading of Winston Churchill’s 1945 victory speech by actor Timothy Spall. The King and Queen later hosted a tea party for Second World War veterans and members of the wartime generation at Buckingham Palace.
The royal family also participated in various events abroad to commemorate the liberation of different regions. Princess Anne and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester attended ceremonies in Denmark, while other members of the royal family engaged in commemorations in other countries.
Nationwide Celebrations and Remembrance
Across the UK, communities have come together to celebrate VE Day 80. Street parties, concerts, and public gatherings have been held, with many towns and cities hosting events to honour the occasion. In London, the Tower of London unveiled a new display of ceramic poppies, and Westminster Abbey hosted a Service of Thanksgiving on May 8. A two-minute national silence was observed at 12:00 on May 8 to remember those who sacrificed their lives during the war.
The Royal British Legion organised a commemorative service at the National Memorial Arboretum, bringing together veterans, families, and the public to pay tribute to those who served.
A Shared Moment of Celebration
VE Day 80 is not only a time for remembrance but also a celebration of peace and unity. The events have provided an opportunity for the nation to reflect on the values of courage, resilience, and solidarity that defined the wartime generation. As the UK honours this significant anniversary, it reaffirms its commitment to preserving the legacy of those who fought for freedom.
The commemorations continue throughout the week, with various events and activities planned to engage communities and ensure that the memory of VE Day endures for future generations.
