In the early hours of July 4, torrential rains caused the Guadalupe River to rise 26 feet in just 45 minutes, overwhelming the region's infrastructure and flood defenses. Tragedy at Camp Mystic: A Community in Mourning
One of the most heartbreaking aspects of the disaster occurred at Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp for girls located near Hunt, Texas. The camp was directly in the path of the floodwaters, and at least 27 individuals—comprising campers and counselors—lost their lives. Among the victims was the camp's longtime director, Dick Eastland, who perished while attempting to evacuate campers.
The community is also grappling with the loss of 9-year-old Janie Hunt, a relative of Kansas City Chiefs owner Clark Hunt, who was attending the camp for the first time. Her tragic death has resonated deeply within the community and beyond.

In the aftermath of the flooding, search and rescue operations have been underway, involving local, state, and federal agencies. As of July 7, over 850 individuals have been rescued from floodwaters.
