Rome — Italy has achieved a remarkable milestone in international volleyball, with both its men’s and women’s teams winning world championship titles in 2025. The dual victories mark a golden era for the sport in the country and have cemented Italy’s status as one of volleyball’s dominant forces.
Men’s Team Secures Fifth World Title
In Pasay City, Philippines, Italy’s men’s national team defeated Bulgaria 3–1 (25-21, 25-17, 17-25, 25-10) to claim the 2025 Men’s World Championship. This triumph marks Italy’s fifth world title, underscoring its long-standing presence among volleyball’s elite.
Yuri Romano led the scoring with 22 points, combining powerful attacks, service aces, and solid blocking. Mattia Bottolo added 19 points, while Alessandro Michieletto, who was later named tournament MVP, showcased composure and leadership throughout the competition.
The victory followed a dramatic semifinal upset over top-ranked Poland, setting the stage for Italy’s commanding performance in the final.
Women’s Team Clinches World Championship
Earlier in the year, Italy’s women’s team captured the 2025 Women’s World Championship in Bangkok, edging out Türkiye in a thrilling five-set final. The match ended 25-23, 13-25, 26-24, 19-25, 15-8, reflecting the intensity and balance of the contest.
It was only the second time Italy has been crowned women’s world champions, the last title dating back to 2002.
Paola Egonu powered the team with 22 points, supported by Myriam Sylla with 19. Setter Alessia Orro, whose orchestration of play was decisive, earned the tournament’s MVP award. The victory added to the women’s earlier success in winning the 2025 Volleyball Nations League, solidifying their dominance on the global stage.
