GAZA STRIP / JERUSALEM – The internationally-brokered ceasefire in the Gaza Strip faced its most severe test yet today, with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launching a "wave of strikes" in response to an attack in southern Gaza that killed two Israeli soldiers. The dramatic escalation has put the nine-day-old truce on the brink of total collapse.
The violence erupted this morning in the Rafah area, where Israeli forces were reportedly operating to dismantle remaining military infrastructure. Meanwhile, Hamas has denied knowledge of the attack, accusing Israel of fabricating pretexts to justify its military escalation.
International Scramble to Contain Crisis
The renewed fighting has sparked urgent diplomatic efforts. Regional powers like Egypt and Qatar, along with key international players, are in round-the-clock contact, scrambling to de-escalate the situation and salvage the fragile agreement.
US officials, who brokered the original deal, had warned just yesterday of "credible reports" indicating an imminent Hamas attack, a claim that the Palestinian militant group vehemently dismissed as "Israeli propaganda."
As airstrikes continued and aid crossings were sealed, the immediate fate of the ceasefire—and the millions of Palestinian civilians facing a dire humanitarian crisis—remains dangerously uncertain. The violence has underscored the deep structural ambiguities of the current truce, which many fear is merely a temporary pause in a larger, unresolved conflict.
