Ceasefire Countdown: Putin Rejects 30-Day Truce, Proposes Talks Instead
Published Date: 11th May, 2025
Kyiv, May 11, 2025 — Russian President Vladimir Putin has dismissed a European-led ultimatum for a 30-day unconditional ceasefire in Ukraine, instead proposing direct negotiations with Kyiv. The proposal, announced late on May 10, suggests holding talks in Istanbul on May 15, mediated by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Putin emphasized that discussions should address the "nuances" of the conflict, implying that a ceasefire could emerge from these talks.
European Leaders Demand Ceasefire or Face Sanctions
This development follows a joint visit to Kyiv by leaders from the UK, France, Germany, and Poland, who, alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, issued a 24-hour ultimatum to Putin. They demanded an unconditional ceasefire beginning May 12, threatening "massive" new sanctions targeting Russia’s energy and banking sectors if the demand is not met. Former U.S. President Donald Trump, participating in a call with the leaders, expressed support for the ceasefire and warned of increased pressure on Russia.
Zelenskyy Welcomes Negotiations, but Ceasefire Must Precede Talks
President Zelenskyy welcomed Putin's proposal for talks but reiterated that a ceasefire must precede any negotiations. He emphasized the need for a "full, lasting, and reliable" ceasefire to halt the ongoing violence.
Ongoing Hostilities as Conflict Escalates
Meanwhile, the conflict continues unabated. Russian forces have reportedly repelled Ukrainian incursions into border regions, and Russian attacks have resulted in civilian casualties in Sumy and Kherson. Since Ukraine signaled openness to a ceasefire on March 11, over 117 civilians have been killed and more than 1,000 injured in Russian airstrikes.
International Community Divided on Path Forward
The international community remains divided on the path forward. While Western leaders push for an immediate ceasefire and increased sanctions, Russia insists on addressing its security concerns and the cessation of arms supplies to Ukraine as prerequisites for peace.
